Community: Help from a friend

Each week, we gather our community’s wisdom. This week, we asked:

How has a friend helped you recently?

"I have a social event coming up where I'll be seeing people from school I've not seen in years. I'm going through some big life events and I'm not in a great place. A good friend has offered to stick with me through the party to help with the social side and deflect anything I might not want to talk about."

"I have recently been feeling that I need a creative outlet in my life but have struggling to decide what to do. My friend gave me a simple suggestion that not only made me feel heard by her, but sparked my own creativity again!"

"Giving me advice and encouragement during my recent job search. It has meant the world to feel like I have such good people in my corner.

"Making the time to listen."

"My friend drove bike in my house in the rain just to give me snacks and a hug."

"My friend today encouraged me to keep going and noted my progress."

"Holding space for the things I am struggling to hold."

"Just by listening."

"By checking in on me during a depressive episode."

"In making me believe it's okay to have my own moment."

"By just being there."

"A colleague made me aware of how inside myself I am sometimes. She likes to get to know me."

"Shown me I can be loved and appreciated and it's not asking for 'too much.'"

"She offered me compassion and waited for me when I didn't have the capacity to be the usual 'me'."

"I overdrafts and they sent me the money to hold myself over."

"Housed me, help me feel safe when I otherwise wouldn't."

"Appreciating my life choices that I feel insecure about still."

"By listening to my feelings without judgment or impatience."

“Just listening to me complain about something that’s been on my mind,”

“Helping me to get to my new classes since I just moved countries.”

“Helped me with teaching me an hour before an exam.”

“Validated me.”

“Just by being there and asking, how are you?”

“3 days ago was my birthday and al of them made me feel loved.”

“Helping me carry my very heavy bags. It was simple but so relieving.”

“Listened without judgment to some dark things.”

“By joining me in the mess instead of expecting me to clean it up for her.”

“Acceptance and support while dealing with a difficult, taboo family issue.”

“Reminded me of my worth with kind words and actions matching them.”
