Instead of trying to fit in, try this
Your environment has a profound impact on your well-being. We all know this, but it doesn’t get enough attention.
Have you ever been in an environment that made you feel like you can’t be yourself? Devastatingly, this is the most common experience. It can happen in a number of different ways, from being disrespected or diminished as a human being; experiencing a lack of belonging; feeling an overwhelming sense of pressure and extreme stress from too many demands; feeling a lack of trust, support and encouragement; not being equipped with the resources, leadership or physical/psychological safety required to do your job effectively; and much more.
That’s why it’s so important to find a context that supports you, and to simultaneously use your capacities to create contexts that support other people.
Here’s what the research tells us about what those environments look like:
- you’re encouraged to be your authentic self
- you’re offered respect, support, care, compassion, and trust
- there is safety to collaborate, grow, say no, and contribute
- you are given a pathway towards greater meaning and purpose
- you have the opportunity to influence and contribute to the environment, to have your voice be heard and to know that you matter
You deserve an environment that helps you to be the most you — your biggest, best, brightest self.
