Weekly: Be the light

Old Happy: Nothing I do matters.
New Happy: I can do something, and it will always matter.

To you, it's no big deal. It's a phone call. A cooked meal. A funny meme. A useful article. A neighborly visit. A compliment. It's nothing!

But to them—it's everything.

It's the action that showed them that they were worthy of love. It's the gesture that reminded them that they aren't alone in this big, scary world. It's what gave them a reason to keep going, to continue putting one foot in front of the other even when they were terrified.

We spend so much time thinking about how to make a difference in the world, pinning its fulfillment on some external achievement or momentous innovation. When, really, the answer to this existential question is staring us right in the face: it's what we do, right here and now, for the people around us. It's how we show up for those who are suffering most. This is our life's work, as human beings: to give of ourselves in the ways we can, and to accept we will never fully understand the great expanse of our impact, and that, in fact, it's not our job to do so; it's our job to simply keep being the light.

Every kind act, no matter how small it may seem, has the potential to mean the world to someone else.
