Talk with, not at
Talking at each other—an all-too easy habit to slip into—gets in the way of one of our deepest needs: to be seen and heard.
Today, in your conversations, try to focus on talking with. Use the WITH acronym to help.
W: After you say something, wait for five seconds before speaking again. This gives the other person a chance to reflect and the space to respond.
I: Inquire. Go beyond questions like "How are you?" and "How was your day?" and inquire about their experiences and emotions.
T: Test your understanding. When the other person shares something with you, repeat it back to them to make sure you understood. Ask, "Did I get that right?"
H: Honor their experience. Affirm what they share with you, recognize their pain and suffering, and celebrate their progress.
