Building momentum is the secret to achieving your goals
Making progress motivates you to make more progress. This is one of the key findings from research by Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer, who studied employees to figure out what creates a “good day” at work. Good days are defined by making progress towards something that matters to you. When you make progress, it builds your momentum, too, creating a positive cycle where the next action is easier to take.
Figuring out how to get that momentum going is often the hardest part. It’s a bit like getting the first domino to fall. What can help?
Put yourself in an energized mood. What makes you powerful and positive? Exercise or movement is one way, or getting a friend or loved one to give you a pep talk. Action is easier when we’re in this emotional state.
Make the first action really achievable. What can you do, in ten minutes or less, that would move you towards your goal? How could you approach it by using your unique gifts and strengths, in a way that makes it more enjoyable?
Pay attention to your progress. Sometimes, our progress isn’t visible to an outsider, so we ignore it too. What did you do today that moved you towards your goals? Writing it down or telling someone about it can help reinforce your sense of progress.
