Your expectations for yourself
There's a big difference between wanting to do well, and setting expectations that are so high that they're essentially unachievable.
Unrealistic expectations could include:
Expecting you'll never make mistakes
Expecting you'll be able to figure it out on the first, second or third attempt
Expecting that everyone will love everything that you do
Expecting that you'll never feel unsure, confused, or scared
Expecting that you'll be able to get it perfect, ever
To discern your expectations, here's a quick tool.
First, think about a challenge in your life that's creating pain for you.
Now, ask yourself: "If I was truly honest, what am I expecting from myself in this situation?"
Finally, reflect: does this seem like a realistic expectation?
It can be surprising to discover that our struggles don't necessarily stem from our situations, but from our unrealistic expectations about what is needed to be successful within them. Instead, consider:
What does enough look like?
What might a first step be?
What would I do if I knew my mistakes were not only acceptable, but necessary?
