Weekly: A different sign

Old Happy: "This feeling is a sign I should give up."
New Happy: "This feeling is a sign that I should ask for help."

One of Old Happy's most pervasive myths is that if you can't do something perfectly, and immediately, you shouldn't do it at all. It's a belief system that has kept countless people from discovering who they truly are, from pursuing their dreams, and from making the unique impact only they can make.

In the pursuit of any dream, there will always be moments when you feel discouraged by setbacks or mistakes. It's perfectly normal: there is no growth without challenge. Unfortunately, we are taught to interpret those feelings as proof that we don't deserve to succeed or that we're unworthy of trying in the first place. So we abandon them, and in the process, ourselves.

Your discouragement is a sign, just not the one you think. It's a sign that you need someone to help you. Someone to remind you of who you really are — of the unique strengths and talents you can draw upon. Someone to reenergize your commitment to the dream — to remind you why you began in the first place. Someone to be there for you as you pursue it — cheering you on at every step of the way.

The next time you feel discouraged, please don't give up. Ask for help instead.
