What if…?
In this moment, what are you worrying about?
The future can feel scary — full of possibilities for things to go wrong.
Your brain spins through them, worrying about this... or about that... and about every possibility in-between.
It's normal to worry about the future. But when it happens, you can respond differently.
First, take a few deep breaths. Studies show just how powerful this simple act can be.
Second, observe your mind's what ifs. Just watch the different things coming up. You can count them like sheep: there's the first one, there's the second, there's the third... waiting it out from a distance, until you've run through all of your worries.
Finally, say to yourself:
"Yes, these things could happen.
But in the unlikely chance that they do, I believe that I can handle them. Because I've handled many things like this before.
"I've gotten through everything that's happened to me. I was scared, I stumbled, I struggled. But I got through it. And I can get through this, too."
Remembering what you've overcome is a powerful source of resilience. Don't be afraid to remind yourself of your victories whenever you need to.
