This Week

trapped by fear, naming fear, facing fear

Are you waiting for the fear to go away before you do the thing?

This is a common mistake we make with fear. The truth is that it doesn't go away. We simply figure out how to face it. Courage involves acknowledging the very real presence of the fear, and taking action alongside of it. It can be terrifying, but you can do it.

Try This
Here's our three-part process for practicing courage:
· Face it: Give it a name; what, exactly, is the fear? Say it out loud or write it down.

· Remind yourself: When have you overcome scary things in the past?

· The smallest step: What's the smallest step you can take towards it? Now, take it.

"Walked away from a domestic situation after 25 years."

"Signed up for a weekly sports class without knowing anyone there."

"Quit a job that didn't align with me."

"Started a run group in my community."

"Exposing myself slowly to heights (I have acrophobia.)"

"Contributed my ideas in a meeting."

I hope these stories of courage remind you of what you're capable of, too. They show us what it looks like to put courage into action: we face our fears, we take one step towards them, and we keep doing it until it's no longer necessary.
